Dedicated to the memory of Jochen Balaam

This site is a tribute to Jochen Balaam, who was born on December 11, 1963.

Jochen has lived an amazing and colourful life.

He often regaled us with stories from his early holidays in Germany with the family, his sailing exploits and his various antics with friends.

He was many things to many people, sailing cohort, go to builder, companion and someone you could just walk into the pub and have a chat with.

Once you came to meet Jochen, invariably you became a lifelong friend.

To his family he was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and nephew. To Neve and I he was a loving a partner and father.

His ‘just do it’, and care free attitudes were infectious, and he taught us to live in the moment, enjoy and be happy. Jochen bought love and laughter into our lives and we feel privileged to have been part of his, albeit for a period that has been too short.

Sadly, Jochen was diagnosed just before Christmas with secondary cancer. A period of time followed, searching for a diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Throughout, Jochen remained determined, strong and brave.

Jochen’s wish was to come home, and this was only made possible with the help of Farleigh Hospice.

No words can express our gratitude to the hospice for making Jochens final days as comfortable as they could have been.

Jochen passed away at home on Sunday 10th February with his family by his side.

Jochen will live on in everything he has touched or crafted. As I look around our home that he lovingly restored and created for us, he is everywhere, but mostly always in our hearts.

He is much loved and will always be remembered.
